The Importance of Merchandising Rights

Why do merchandising rights deserve greater attention now than in the past?

In the December/January issue of Onfilm Magazine, McLaughlin Law Principal, David McLaughlin, examines why the growing success of the NZ film and TV industries means more attention should be paid to negotiating merchandising rights.  If a film or TV project is likely to leave NZ shores or if even the rights to recreate the format are likely to be sold overseas, more focus is needed on defining precisely what merchandise and ancillary rights are attached, especially given the popularity of video games and the ever increasing success of  iPad/iPhone apps.
